- 1/4 teaspoon almond extract
For the Cream Layer
- 1 pound cream cheese, softened
- 2/3 cup granulated sugar
- 2 cups heavy whipping cream
For the Trifle
- 1 prepared angel food cake
- 2 pints fresh blueberries
- 2 pints fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced
How to Make Patriotic Berry Trifle
1. Prepare the Syrup
Combine 1/4 cup sugar, fresh lemon juice, and water in a small saucepan.
Cook over medium heat, stirring until the sugar has completely dissolved.
Remove from the heat and stir in the almond extract.
Set aside to cool slightly.
2. Prepare the Angel Food Cake
Slice the angel food cake and lightly brush both sides with the lemon-almond syrup.
Cut the cake into approximately 1-inch cubes.
The syrup gives the cake extra flavor while helping keep each layer soft.
3. Make the Cream Cheese Filling
Place the softened cream cheese and 2/3 cup sugar in a large mixing bowl.
Beat until completely smooth.
Gradually add the heavy cream and continue beating until the mixture becomes light, fluffy, and thick enough to hold soft peaks.
Avoid overmixing.
4. Start Layering
Place half of the angel food cake cubes in the bottom of a large glass trifle bowl.
Add a generous layer of blueberries.
Spoon half of the cream cheese mixture over the berries, followed by a layer of sliced strawberries.
5. Repeat
Add the remaining cake cubes followed by more blueberries and the remaining cream mixture.
Finish the top with the remaining strawberries and blueberries.
You can arrange the fruit in a decorative red, white, and blue pattern or simply scatter the berries naturally across the top.
6. Chill
Cover the trifle and refrigerate for at least 1 hour before serving.
Chilling allows the flavors and layers to come together while keeping the dessert cool and refreshing.
